Iceland has been all over our Instagram feeds the past few years, thanks to affordable flights from the United States and the country's breathtaking landscapes. Iceland repeatedly makes it onto lists of the safest countries to travel to. In fact, it was declared the safest country in the world in 2020, so you won’t need to worry about traveling solo.
For starters, a chance to see the Aurora Borealis is probably at the top of any travel nut’s bucket list, and in Iceland, you’re likely to catch a glimpse if you plan your trip from September to April. Outside of that, Iceland has options for those looking to pamper themselves and relax or get out into the wilderness for some wild exploration.
Travelers love to do a road trip when visiting Iceland, and the Golden Circle is the most common route. It will take you to some of the most popular sites, such as the Great Geysir and Gullfoss Waterfall. After that, you can visit the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal pool known to rejuvenate your skin. You can take a dip no matter what season you visit because temperatures stay at 102 degrees year-round. Other experiences include volcanoes, black stone beaches, glaciers, and whale watching.
To top off all of the natural beauty is the beauty of the people, both inside and out! Solo travel through Iceland will give you memories and epic photos that will last a lifetime.
The question isn’t what Spain has to offer; it’s what doesn’t Spain have to offer?! The country is jam-packed with culture, from delicious tapas to flamenco dancing to Islamic architecture. So whether you’re looking for museums and history or relaxing on the beach, there is a Spanish city calling your name.
History and architecture buffs should head to Granada to see the world-famous Alhambra. While you’re in Andalusia (the south of Spain), you can also check out the yellow sand beaches of Malaga or the Roman-founded city of Cordoba for more ancient history. Madrid, the capital, offers world-class museums with famous works from Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, and countless others.
Perhaps the most visited city in Spain is Barcelona, and for good reason. Here you’ve easy access to gorgeous Mediterranean beaches, nightlife that lasts late into the following morning, delicious seafood and wine, plus Gaudi’s famous architecture. Other notable cities to visit are Seville, Valencia, San Sebastian, Bilbao, or you can even hop over to the Balearic Islands.
The Spanish know how to party, and you’ll love the cheap beer, strong gin and tonics, and dancing late into the night. Plus, there’s a festival or holiday nearly every month, so you’ll be able to catch something exciting like Las Fallas or La Tomatina.
If you’re looking to travel somewhere as different from the United States as possible, you may consider Thailand. Located in Southeast Asia, Thailand has long been considered one of the best travel destinations, especially for young singles. Thailand is known for its divine, spicy food, smiling locals, and never-ending choices of beaches.
Perhaps one of the best things about Thailand is you can visit any time of the year, making it easy to visit no matter when you have the time off. During dry season, you can spend a few weeks island hopping in the south or stay in the north to soak up the Thai culture during the rainy season.
Top tourist activities include visiting some of the thousands of Buddhist temples, diving in the pristine waters of the Gulf of Thailand or the Andaman Sea, strolling through the local markets, soaking up the sun on the white sand beaches, and drinking buckets upon buckets of booze. Yes, they literally sell alcohol in buckets!
On top of all the fantastic things to experience in Thailand, the country is cheap and safe to travel. Most locals working in tourism speak English and are more than happy to help you figure out how to get to your next location. You can spend as little as $5 a night at hostels and a couple of bucks on street food or treat yourself to five-star resorts and restaurants at a much more affordable rate than in other countries. Thailand is typically safe for female solo travel. Be cautious of what and how much you drink, and be careful if you rent a scooter.
As one of the safest countries in South America, Peru has been receiving more and more tourists each year, and we’re not surprised. Peru is another country filled with ancient history that will blow your mind. In each new city you go to, you’ll learn about another ancient civilization that resided there centuries ago.
Obviously, one of the main highlights of Peru is Machu Pichu, which you can get to by train or by hiking the Inca Trail. But Peru is much more than that. There is endless hiking which will take you to a variety of spectacular sites like Gocta Waterfall, Rainbow Mountain, Laguna 69, or Colca Canyon. The natural diversity in Peru is unrivaled, and you can go from beach to mountain to desert all in one trip. You can even visit the Amazon in Peru.
Did we mention the alpacas?! Everyone’s dying to snag a selfie with an alpaca on their trip to Peru, and you’ll have no shortage of options as you travel this marvelous country. There are also plenty of llamas and even vicuña that you’ll see running in the wild.
The Spanish spoken in Peru is relatively easy to understand compared to its neighboring countries, and it’s definitely a good idea to know some basics to help you get around as not all locals speak English. Peru is generally safe for female travel, but you should be mindful just as you would at home.
New Zealand is another country that is often voted as one of the safest in the world, so a visit here is the perfect idea for your first solo trip, especially if you’re looking for as much natural beauty as possible. The downside of New Zealand is how far away it is, so it will take some serious flight time to get there, and it’s the most expensive country on our list. However, once you get there, you’ll realize quickly that the trek and budget is worth it.
The country is split into two islands, North Island and South Island. Check out the North Island for amazing beaches or the South Island for epic scenery of fjords and glaciers. New Zealand is a trekkers paradise, with countless hikes to choose from that visit a wide variety of epic natural landmarks. New Zealand is also known for its choice of some extreme sports. Get your adrenaline pumping with bungee jumping, sky diving, paragliding, cold-water scuba diving, or white water rafting.
While you’ll have no problem with language barriers, you’ll still be able to learn about the unique indigenous culture, the Maori. The people of New Zealand are welcoming and kind to tourists, plus you’ll likely meet many other travelers who are there on a working holiday visa. We’ll have to warn you, though, if you travel to New Zealand, you might not ever want to come back!
