9 Books Single Women Should Consider Reading
Reading is Fundamental and depending on the material it can also serve as a great source of encouragement. I wasn’t much of a reader growing up and I blame it mostly on my dyslexia, however, as I’ve gotten older I’ve fallen in love with it. I am always learning something new and even find myself getting lost in the fictional story worlds that authors create.
During this season in my life, I have been drawn to reading material about singleness and how society has played a large part in developing strong ideologies on how single people should live their lives. These books have taught me how to approach my single season and how to live a full life while waiting for a partner. Each book makes me feel more liberated and comfortable with my relationship status. Additionally, I’m learning healthier habits on how to build better relationships with others, whether it be platonic or romantic. I encourage you to give one, some, or all of these books a read, as I feel they will benefit you during your single season one way or another.
"All the Single Ladies" highlights all the badass single women in history and shares statistical information on how society has and continues to try and cripple the liberated single woman. Additionally, it highlights the double standard of singleness between men and women, causing the belief that women can’t live satisfying lives without marriage and children. Author Rebecca Traister interviews memorable women in history and shares their personal stories dealing with a misogynistic society.
I enjoyed getting to read about so many well-accomplished single women. This book helped me to accept the fact that my happiness isn’t stemmed from my marital status and in my singleness I have the time to do phenomenal things for myself, my future, and my community.
This book is a must-read! Like most, I have some destructive habits that I have been wanting to break and some healthier habits I’ve wanted to build. In this book, James Clear shares helpful strategies that assist you in creating healthy habits. He teaches the 1 percent rule and explains how continual effort towards a habit will produce habitual results. Additionally, he gives great advice on ways to make your environment more suitable so that you can increase the progress of your new habit.
"Atomic Habits" is a great read for everyone and it will teach you how to focus on forming and/or quitting habits. I have implemented some of his strategies and have already seen some results and I told myself during this season I will build healthier habits for myself but also habits that I can share with my future family.
I originally got this book solely based on the fact that Elizabeth went to Italy. I am enamored with Italian culture and can’t wait to write about the adventures I’ll have while there. However, while reading this book not only did I get to experience Elizabeth’s journey of self-discovery, I was empowered to start my own. Elizabeth experiences different cultures and food and creates a self wellness routine that includes meditation and prayer.
This book made me appreciate my journey and not obsess over how and when I’d reach my ideal destination to success. It inspired me to travel more and devise practical savings plans so that I can. I feel that every single woman should give this a read to gain the encouragement to live life more joyfully.
In this book, author Jennifer L. Taitz, a licensed clinical psychologist, offers science-based strategies that will help you during your search for a soul mate. She highlights the difficulty with dating and the importance of not holding onto the idea that being in a relationship with someone else is the only way you’ll experience happiness. Additionally, she incorporates healthy practices and techniques such as Loving-Kindness Meditation, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and steps on how to properly handle your emotions.
This book helped me to recognize the qualities I need and want in a partner. Along with helping me to cease the continuous process of overanalyzing past relationships. It shared useful information on how to date with ease and helped me to create the mindset that I have a wonderful and happy life whether I am single or in a relationship.
Amazon suggested this book for me right after a situationship of mine ended. My first thought was, “Amazon got jokes”, but then I convinced myself that my spirit guides were telling me this was something I needed to learn (I’m a sucker for suggestive advertising). This book helped me to understand that my emotions are an indicator of my conscious and subconscious mind and I need to learn how to properly understand them so it will be easier for me to communicate them.
It also made me truly recognize that my emotions are valid and I have every right to express them, however, I must be mindful of how I do, so that my message will be conveyed accurately. This book includes helpful exercises that helped me to dodge negative thoughts and transform them into positive ones.
I now understand that using my emotions as a guide will make me an effective communicator and allow me to greatly empathize with others, making it easier to build and maintain authentic relationships.

It was incredibly mind-opening and helped me to stay in and appreciate the present moment. It explains how the mind doesn’t have any real power in the present moments (unless solving a problem in real time) and draws you back to past situations or makes you worry about the future, causing you to become anxious or depressed.
It’s a definite must-read for anyone who just recently experienced a breakup and needs the help to stop ruminating. I plan on rereading this book in every new chapter of my life so that I’m reminded of the valuable life lessons taught within it.
I feel this book made me much more appreciative of the little things and helped me to recognize when my manifestations and prayers become reality. This piece of literature is a large contributor to my growth and the moment I finished reading it I felt more enlightened and at ease because I am now more focused on the things I can control and have let go of the things I can’t.
Pastor Michael Todd teaches you how to win in relationships and how to move on from past mistakes. He checked me multiple times in this book and in his Youtube series. This message challenged me to implement stronger boundaries and alter my patterns to develop healthy relationship habits to use in the future. He displayed vulnerability, shared his insecurities and lessons that helped him to develop a stronger marriage and friendships.
He explains the power and purpose of sex, based on his religious beliefs and models what a good relationship looks like. This book also highlights how to properly communicate with your partner and the effects of associating with the wrong people. This was such a wonderful book and the lessons taught can be applied to platonic and romantic relationships.
Author John Kim aka The Angry Therapist wrote this amazing book about some of the lessons he learned during his single season. He touches on how spending time alone has allowed him to work on becoming a healthier version of himself. I deeply appreciate how this book highlights the importance of having your own set of friends opposite of your partner(s) and why participating in activities that involve a community is beneficial to your mental health.
This book encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone and start doing all the things that I have written down on my bucket list. It helped me to realize that this season of my life is the best time to work on my healing and work on all of my personal and professional goals.
This book, right here…. will have you feeling yourself. Jen helped my Leo rising come out and play with the constant reminder that I am capable of doing anything that I put my mind to and work for. This book offers comedic advice that helped me to recognize my self-sabotaging beliefs. Additionally, it's one of the reasons I was inspired to start my spiritual journey because it helped me to find solace in mediation and educated me on the importance of maintaining a balance of a fun and productive life.
One of my favorite quotes in the book is “Obstacles and challenges are the agents of growth.” These words inspire me to look at all my challenges as tools to help me evolve into my higher self and by simply changing my outlook on my difficulties, I have been able to overcome them with less stress and a calmer mindset. Thanks, Jen for such wonderful advice.
These books shared so much information about single life and how to make the most of the time that I have been granted. Additionally, they highlighted the importance of loving myself and how to create boundaries and discipline to achieve my goal of having healthier relationships overall. I am sure that over time I will add to this list as my love for reading has skyrocketed during the pandemic.
