Meet Our July Woman Crush: Karmen Huerta
I first met Karmen at a local flea market that was organized by one of my favorite local bodegas, Laraya’s Bodega. She struck up a conversation with me while we were waiting on our food and as time passed we stumbled on the topic of our creative outlets. I shared that I created and maintained a lifestyle site for single women and she told me about her podcast YtuNovio. We then began to talk about our single lives and what we have learned and hope to share with others.
I love her energy and the passion she has for uplifting other women. And I am a huge fan of her social media because it beautifully highlights the beauty in being single.
This month I am honored to have Karmen as our Woman Crush and invite you to learn more about her journey and how she is creating an exciting and solid foundation for her future self.
Tell us About Yourself!
My name is Karmen and I am a digital and marketing assistant for Universal Music Group/Fonodisa. I am creative at heart and addicted to social media. I say this openly because not only do I create for a living but I truly love engaging with others online and enjoy sharing parts of me in hopes that I inspire others to be their most authentic selves. How long have you been single and what important lessons have you learned from your Past relationshipS?
I have been single all my life and I say this because I have never had a title such as “girlfriend” or been in an exclusive monogamous relationship. However, I have had a lot of experience in “relationships” & “situationships” and what I have learned is that I would love to be monogamous. I always thought that polyamory would be something that would fit my needs but as I get older and have learned more about myself I see that monogamy is for me. What did I learn from my previous relationship? I learned that I can’t make someone love me and that I shouldn’t stay in a relationship that makes me feel anxious, belittled and unsafe.
I think a common misconception of being single is that we are picky or prude. I definitely am not picky. I love energy, spirits and of course I am not prude. I am a sexual being and I am free. I believe I am changing the narrative because I am open about love, relationships, and sex. The Latino community can be old school when it comes to these things but it’s time to shed the Catholic guilt we have been raised on and let our freak flag fly.
What do you feel your single season/LIfe has taught you about yourself?
My single season has taught me so much every year and for that I am truly grateful. These are all lessons that I feel I need to learn and take with me as I move on in my love journey. However, the most important lesson it has taught me is that I am enough. I am whole and beautiful now in the present. I am worthy of love. Now. Not Later. But Now.
I have a great support system that I call friends and family. I am really blessed to have them when I feel the lowest because they don’t judge me and they truly love me with all my flaws. Also, I have found that traveling and dating myself have been ways I cope with the “loneliness” because at the end of the day I have me for life.
How do you practice self love?
I date myself. I practice gratitude and I cry when I need to cry. Sometimes we just need a good cry.
What words of wisdom do you wish to share with other Single Women?
Choose Yourself. Always. And never look back. Take what you learned and move forward. Also, it’s ok to miss “them” but that doesn’t mean to reach out and let them back in your life.
