Overcoming Burnout: Learning How to Reset

I always feel a brief moment of sadness when my favorite candle burns out. I recently caught the demise of my Sweet Grapefruit candle from PF Candle and simultaneously purchased a replacement as the flame began to dwindle.

Lately, I have been recognizing the signs of my own burnout. The feeling of being overwhelmed, anxious, and drained. I felt like I hit a wall and couldn’t move forward. All I wanted to do was latibulate in silence, hoping that it will give me the charge I needed to jolt back into a more productive version of myself.

Burnout is something that many of us experience at some point in our lives and can be caused by a variety of factors, including work stress, personal issues, and even just the day-to-day grind of life. In this blog post, I'll discuss some ways that helped me overcome burnout and are now pivotal tools I will continue to use when experiencing it again.

The Importance of Taking a Break

REST, REST, REST! When you're feeling burnt out, the best thing you can do is take a break. This might mean taking a day off work, going on a much needed holiday, or even just taking a few hours to yourself. I will typically go on a longer walk than usual, but recently I stepped away from social media for 3 days and loved it! It helped me to recharge and give me time to regain my joy.

During your break, it's important to disconnect from your usual routine and give yourself space to breathe. Let go of the worries that are polluting your mind and allow yourself to be still.

Creating Systems for Success

Sometimes, burnout is caused by feeling overwhelmed and disorganized. In these cases, creating systems can be incredibly helpful. One tool that is now an unhealthy obsession of mine is Notion, it allows me to organize all aspects of my life in one place. By creating a system that works for you, you can reduce anxiety and feel more in control of your life. For instance, you can create a "to-do" list and prioritize your tasks, so that you don't feel like you're juggling too many things at once. You can also use Notion to create a schedule or a calendar that helps you manage your time more effectively.

Self-Care is Key

Self-care days are my favorite and I’ve been heavily influenced by my favorite social media influencer, Jackie Aina. She has a luxurious monthly self-care ritual that consists of a lavish beauty routine that includes facials, eyebrow lamination, and in-home manicures and pedicures. I’ve created and incorporated my own monthly routine to help with my overall physical wellness — and to help with my mental wellness, I’ve included sessions with my new therapist I found on Therapy Lab.

I encourage you to sit down and think of the things you’d like to include in your self-care ritual and pick when in the month you’ll participate in the activity. Making it a monthly or weekly routine is just another way you can pour into yourself and realign your energy.

Mindfulness and Meditation

Mindfulness and meditation are other tools that can be helpful in overcoming burnout. At the Single Girl Club’s Sound Bath Meditation with Libreina Wellness, I felt a sense of calm when the sound bowls sang. It helped me to reconnect with my body and stay present in the moment. Practices like these can help you to feel more grounded and centered. There are many apps and resources available to help you get started with mindfulness and meditation, and you can read about the different ones here. Even just a few minutes of mindfulness or meditation each day can make a big difference in how you feel.

Burnout is a common experience, but it doesn't have to be a permanent one. By taking a break, creating systems, practicing self-care, and incorporating mindfulness and meditation into your routine, you can overcome burnout and get back to feeling like yourself again. Remember, it's important to prioritize your mental and physical health, even when it feels like everything else is more important. By taking care of yourself, you'll be better equipped to handle whatever life throws your way.
